Claude Fable 5 & Mythos 5: What Changes for AI Builders Outside the US
Anthropic releases first Mythos-class model for general use with novel safeguards. We break down what it means for engineering, research, and data sovereignty.
The launch that redefines the frontier
Anthropic announced today Claude Fable 5, the first Mythos-class model available for general use, alongside Claude Mythos 5, an unrestricted version for cyberdefenders and critical infrastructure providers.
Fable 5 surpasses every model Anthropic has previously made generally available across virtually all capability benchmarks: software engineering, knowledge work, vision, and scientific research. The longer and more complex the task, the larger Fable 5's lead.

The numbers that matter
Pricing: $10/million input tokens, $50/million output tokens. Less than half the price of the previous Mythos Preview.
Key capabilities:
- Software engineering: Stripe reported that Fable 5 compressed months of engineering into days. It migrated a 50-million-line Ruby codebase in one day, work that would have taken a full team over two months by hand.
- Analytical knowledge: Highest score on Hebbia's Finance Benchmark for senior-level reasoning. IMC confirmed superior performance across trading analysis, conceptual reasoning, root-cause analysis, and expected-value analysis.
- Vision: New state-of-the-art. Reconstructs web app source code from screenshots alone. Completed Pokémon FireRed using only raw game screenshots with no navigation aids.

- Memory and long context: In Slay the Spire, persistent file-based memory tripled performance gains compared to Opus 4.8. Fable 5 reached the final act three times more often.

- Scientific research: Mythos 5 designed drug candidates without human assistance, matching or beating skilled human operators. Generated novel molecular biology hypotheses preferred by scientists ~80% of the time in blinded evaluations. Conducted autonomous genomics research that outperformed a recent Science-published model despite being 100 times smaller.

Safeguards: the innovation few are discussing
Fable 5 ships with AI safety classifiers that function as an immune system: queries touching cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, or distillation are automatically routed to Opus 4.8.
What this means in practice:
- Less than 5% of sessions trigger the fallback
- For the 95%+ of remaining sessions, Fable 5's performance is effectively identical to Mythos 5
- Users are informed when a fallback occurs
- Classifiers are tuned conservatively: some benign requests will be caught, and Anthropic acknowledges this openly

This dynamic safety layer approach is relevant for anyone operating AI in regulated markets. Instead of hard refusals, the system redirects to a still highly capable model. It mitigates risk without destroying user experience.
Why this matters for the global AI market
Models are getting more capable and cheaper simultaneously. The price/performance curve for frontier models is dropping fast. Fable 5 costs less than half what comparable models cost a year ago. This compresses margins for API resellers but opens space for products built on long-horizon autonomous agents.
Autonomous agents are now viable. Fable 5's ability to maintain focus across millions of tokens and improve its own outputs using persistent notes is exactly what was missing for agents that execute complex tasks without constant supervision.
Data sovereignty remains a differentiator. Mythos 5 with lifted safeguards is only available through Project Glasswing, in collaboration with the US government. For institutions outside the US that need advanced cybersecurity capabilities without relying on foreign infrastructure, local data sovereignty isn't a buzzword. It's a requirement.
What we're building
At BaXiJen, we track every frontier launch not to adopt uncritically, but to understand: how does this expand what's possible to build with small, local models?
Fable 5 shows that the future is long-horizon autonomous agents. Our work with SLMs fine-tuned for Brazilian regulated sectors moves in the same direction: specialized models that execute complex tasks autonomously, running where the client needs them.
The convergence is clear. Large models show what's possible. Small, specialized models bring that capability into production, locally, with data under control.
